Bundle Up

Why does anyone live in northern Minnesota? That's the question most people in this area ask when the temperature is extremely cold. For what seemed to be obvious reasoning we had to draw the line somewhere when it came to running outside. The first time we rescheduled a run the temperature was -30. No way would I get out of bed that early in the morning just so I could get frostbite. Last Thursday's weather forecast was very much the same but with higher wind speeds. We decided to set our run for Friday morning instead. However, the temperature was suppose to be even colder that morning. Dumb! Anyway, instead of running Thursday morning we bundled up and headed out for a 4 mile run in the evening. It was a beautiful clear night with stars glowing bright (also an indication of very cold weather).
To prepare for the cold temps I wear 3 layers on the bottom, 4 on top, stocking hat, face mask, Smartwool socks, and mittens. When I can afford the "professional" runners Coldgear it will probably only be 2 layers of clothing. No, we are not insane because really it's not that bad. After running about 5 minutes the body starts to heat up and then the cold simply diminishes. It's when the body doesn't move very much that you feel as if you could shatter into millions of pieces at any moment. Kind of like when you go on a 6 hour fire call after running 4 miles when the temperature is at the 30 below mark. Yep, Thursday night fun with running and a fire all jam packed into one. Needless to say no one on the Fire Department slept well that night (actually morning). I am just a little busy with my life, but I like it!
